(Nb)-anatase, titanite : sur une intrigante histoire de famille (Binntal, CH – Devero, I)

L’anatase est un minéral extrêmement abondant, qui se décline au Binntal sous de multiples aspects. Sa chimie est redoutablement simple : TiO2. Il n’empêche : encore et toujours, ce minéral conserve sa capacité à nous surprendre et fasciner par sa diversité.

Découvertes inédites de fossiles dans les Alpes grisonnes
Deux nouveaux fossiles découverts dans la région du Ducan près de Davos appartiennent à une nouvelle espèce mondiale de cœlacanthe. Ces poissons âgés de 241 millions d'années sont parfaitement conservés et apportent une nouvelle perspective sur l'évolution de ces animaux ancestraux.

L'histoire de la découverte des cristaux géants au Tiefengletscher dans le canton d'Uri en 1868 est aujourd'hui encore fascinante. A cette époque, des cristalliers bernois dégagèrent des quartz fumés d'une taille atteignant un mètre au Gletschhhorn, sur sol uranais. 14,5 tonnes de cristaux au total furent transportés en toute hâte au-delà de la frontière cantonale. L'épopée de la découverte est racontée dans la première partie d'un article détaillé.
Une nouvelle espèce minérale en provenance de Fianel (GR), la rüdlingerite

Le gisement de Fianel dans le Val Ferrera (GR) fait partie de ces petits gisements manganésifères alpins qui certes n’ont jamais connu un passé économiquement brillant, mais qui ont acquis quelques lettres de noblesse minéralogique. Ainsi, et outre d’autres espèces rares, Fianel peut s’enorgueillir de l’existence de trois espèces-type manganésifères: fianellite, ansermetite et scheuchzerite. Nous pouvons annoncer ici pour la première fois l’existence d’une quatrième, la rüdlingerite, qui, fort à propos, honore un de ces pionniers.

Les minéralogistes disposent de moyens très performants pour identifier les minéraux et les roches. Cependant le microscope polarisant demeure nécessaire. Il révèle des informations minéralogiques de première importance : forme, habitus, couleur, relief, indices de réfraction, paragenèse et, pour l'observateur averti : biréfringence, angle d'extinction, macles, système cristallin, etc.
Aktashite et nowackiite, deux intéressantes (re)découvertes

Nous avons déjà mentionné dans cette rubrique le « ruban no. 1 » de dolomite sur lequel travaille de manière discontinue la FGL depuis 2014. Dans la carrière du Lengenbach, la minéralisation est fortement zonée et ce mince ruban, situé dans la partie centrale, s’est révélé très riche en espèces et a fourni en particulier de rares minéraux de thallium qui n’avaient plus été trouvés depuis l’époque de l’AGL, soit depuis le siècle passé. D’autres, comme la richardsollyite, sont même entièrement nouveaux ou, comme la picotpaulite, nouveaux pour le site (et la Suisse). L’aktashite fait partie de cette dernière catégorie.

ABSTRACTS IN ENGLISH
(Nb)-anatase, titanite
Two (Nb)-anatase generations were found in an alpine fissure from Wannigletscher, Binn valley, Switzerland. The first generation consists of black centimetric quadratic platelets. Superficial alteration of this (Nb)-anatase gave birth to white-grey titanite, which in turn was altered into a second generation of yellow-orange (Nb)-anatase, forming tiny rectangular (Nb)-anatase platelets. The niobium content in this second generation of (Nb)-anatase has decreased compared to its parent. Hematite, magnetite, epidote, allanite-(Ce) and apatite were also observed in the paragenesis.
Other findings in this locality and other localities within the Monte Leone nappe show that the association of yellow-orange tablets of (Nb)-anatase on titanite is a marker for the scarcer REE- and/or Be-minerals, respectively allanite-(Ce) or bertrandite and milarite.

Ründlingerite, a new species from Fianel
The small manganese deposit of Fianel is now the type locality for a fourth mineral: rüdlingerite, Mn2VAsO7 · 2H2O. The new mineral is related to fianelite, As replacing V at one of the two vanadium sites of the latter. Rüdlingerite forms orange, prismatic crystals, a late-stage formation. The species is named after Gottfired Rüdlinger (*1919), a pioneer collector in the search and study of the small secondary minerals from the Alpine manganese ore deposits.
Krettnichite
We report on the occurrence of krettnichite, PbMn3+2(VO4)2(OH)2, at Fianel. The little deposit in canton Graubünden is only the second locality worldwide from which this species is being unambiguously identified. The tiny crystals are dark brown and are loosely associated with saneroite. While at Fianel krettnichite was formed – together with the other vanadates – during a late remobilization phase of Alpine metamorphism, it formed at Krettnich (D), the type locality, early on during the emplacement of the manganite hydrothermal vein deposit, two very different settings.
Aktashite
Aktashite was recently identified for the first time in the Lengenbach quarry where it is one of the few mercury minerals. It was found as porous, grey crystals, a late formation in dolomite “ribbon no. 1”, in the central part of the quarry, where a series of other rare species has been recovered in the last few years, among others and for the first time after a long interruption, nowackiite, its zinc analogon, in good crystals.
